Getting better dental care as 2025 starts is a great idea; it’ll help you avoid unpleasant oral issues. Still, you should learn how dentistry can help before you do anything else. You won’t get the most effective treatment results otherwise, which would be a bit of a waste. The good news is your Lewisville dentist will gladly help you start. With that said, here are four common oral health problems and their treatments.

Bad Breath

Also known as halitosis, bad breath is something everyone has had at some point. It can be a somewhat awkward issue to face, especially in social situations. What’s worse is that it also has diverse causes – tongue bacteria, dry mouth, gum infections, etc.

The only bright side to bad breath is that dentists have many ways to treat it. In some cases, a dental team could provide you with medicated mouthwash to treat dry mouth. Alternatively, they could remove smelly germs from your tongue and other mouth tissues.

Cavities

Tooth decay is a fairly common condition around the world. In just the U.S. alone, over 90% of American adults have had at least one cavity. The cause of such decay is often a buildup of plaque, usually from poor oral care, a diet with too much sugar or carbs, etc.

Given their commonness, it’s natural that dentists can prevent and treat cavities. Simple dental cleanings can remove harmful plaque before it decays your teeth. On the other hand, a dental crown can protect a decayed tooth from further harm.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a very prevalent mouth problem, with almost half of all Americans aged 30 and older having it. The condition stems from a buildup of gumline plaque irritating your mouth over time. As that happens, you can suffer bleeding gums, gum recession, and (in severe cases) tooth loss.

Of course, dentists even have ways to manage gum disease. Regular dental checkups prevent plaque from building up enough to cause the condition. If you already have the disease, there’s also the option of getting scaling and root planing. This latter treatment removes the infecting bacteria to help your gums heal and recover.

Tooth Infections

A tooth infection is another oral problem you should watch out for. In general, this condition stems from bacteria infecting and irritating your tooth’s inner pulp. That process can result in toothaches, fever, and even tooth loss over time.

Luckily, dentists have great ways to both prevent and treat tooth infections. Common fluoride treatments can strengthen enamel to keep out harmful bacteria. Meanwhile, a present infection can be treated through a root canal. The treatment removes the infected pulp while sparing your pearly white, while the latter removes the entire tooth.

Having learned some common oral health problems, you now know what to see your dentist for. Keep that in mind as you make your mouth healthier in 2025!
