Did you know that some form of tooth whitening has been around for centuries? As long ago as 4000 BC, Egyptians were using pumice stones to create a wine vinegar paste to bleach their teeth. Fast-forward to the 18th century and people were roughing the tooth surface with metal files, then applying acid to bleach the teeth. The desire for white teeth has not decreased, but how can you have whiter teeth without harming your teeth and gums?
Modern Tooth Whitening
In 1989, a method was patented that used carbamide peroxide gel and custom-fitted trays to control the application process and reduce any harmful effect to the teeth. Since that time, research has improved the process and there are several products available for tooth whitening.
Opalescence® Teeth Whitening System
Sehnert Precision Dentistry uses the Opalescence Teeth Whitening System to provide you with a custom-created tray and system to use in the privacy of your home. We chose Opalescence® because it provides us with the most control and provides our patients with the best results while ensuring that teeth and gums suffer no harm during the process.
The Low-Down on Opalescence®
Opalescence is a flavored carbamide peroxide gel that is loaded into a custom tray with a syringe. The gel is viscous, so it remains in place better than other available gels. The patented formula provides sustained release of the gel, which means the bleaching agent remains active for hours after it is placed in the mouth. Because we can choose levels of the bleaching agent from low to higher, we can adjust the amount and the length of time that the gel is in contact with your teeth. This is particularly beneficial to those who are prone to tooth sensitivity.
Opalescence contains “PF” (potassium nitrate and sulfide), which reduces sensitivity during and after the bleaching process. It also has been shown to lower patients’ susceptibility to tooth decay, and it improves enamel hardness and health.
Finally, there are three flavors of gel — mint, melon, and regular — with one of them sure to please your palate!
What to Expect at Your Appointment
We will take impressions of your teeth and use the model we make to create your custom tray. Your tray will be designed to ensure the bleaching gel will remain where it is supposed to — on your teeth, not your gums. We will determine which gel concentration is appropriate for your teeth and the length of time you should wear the filled trays. Then we will demonstrate how to fill the trays with the correct amount of gel. That’s it! Your appointment should take less than an hour and you will leave with your personalized, custom-fitted tray and gel (you choose the flavor).
