Healthy Treats For Healthy Teeth
As the months get warmer, we know that many of our patients will be enjoying cookouts, BBQ’s, special trips, and many other exciting adventures. We know that during these special events, typical food and drink choices are replaced with special treats and beverages not normally consumed. While a treat once in a while is something that everyone enjoys, it is best not to make it a habit. Frequent unhealthy snacking habits can lead to numerous issues with your oral health. Every time we eat, small bits of food particles remain in the teeth, eventually turning into bacteria. This bacteria, if not cleaned quickly and properly, can turn into tooth decay. We want to share some snacking tips to help your oral health remain in pristine condition.
When to Snack
It is always best to eat at mealtimes. This is the optimal time for the best oral health, as the saliva production is greater and more bacteria is being washed away. However, that is not always ideal because people do get hungry between meals. If you need to eat a snack between meals, it is best to choose something low in sugar that will reduce your risk of tooth decay.
You Are What You Eat
It can get confusing at times deciding on a snack that is healthy and filling and will not cause harm to your oral health. There are a number of choices that we recommend:
Snacks such as carrot sticks, apple slices, and celery are great crunchy choices. These foods can act as a “toothbrush”, giving an extra swipe across the teeth to remove remaining bacteria.
Cheese and Yogurt
These dairy-filled products are adding extra calcium to your diet which is great for the health of your teeth and bones.
A small side salad is an excellent choice for a snack because greens are full of healthy vitamins and minerals.
