Tips to Maintain Proper Oral Health This Summer
Summer is a fun time where many rules seem to fly out the window. It’s always fun to enjoy yourself, especially after the past year, but it’s important to still stay on top of your oral health. Here are some tips to help ensure that you don’t end the summer with dental health worries:
Continue Your Routine
Even while traveling or having an occasional late night, it can be tempting to forgo completing your oral hygiene routine or even skip brushing your teeth when the exhaustion sets in from a long day. We encourage you to remain diligent with any brushing and flossing routine you have established for yourself and your family. Lingering bacteria on the teeth can cause decay and lead to cavities, discomfort, and costly dental bills.
Limit Sugary Drinks and Snacks
Vacations and events with family and friends always seem to be full of endless drinks and snacks that you typically wouldn’t consume. While enjoying a treat here or there in moderation is typical, it is important to remember that overindulging can lead to dental problems later in the year. We suggest drinking extra water to help cleanse the mouth when brushing isn’t possible right away.
Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption
We know that some of our patients enjoy an alcoholic beverage from time to time. On a hot summer day, there is something nostalgic about enjoying a cold beer, glass of wine, or a cocktail. Just like with sugary drinks and snacks, it is best to enjoy alcohol in moderation. Alcohol contains a surprising amount of sugar and can do just as much harm as a sugary soft drink.
